Bonding or Mechanical Fastening? Framing a Composite Assembly Review

Machining & Assembly / Purchasing guide

At a glance

Choosing between bonding, mechanical fastening or a combined joint requires an assembly review. Procurement can make that review productive by supplying geometry, service requirements, maintenance needs and acceptance criteria. It should not decide the joining method from appearance alone or assume that an approach used on another part will transfer unchanged.

Describe assembly and service access

Explain how the component is installed, inspected and removed. State whether replacement or disassembly is required. Include access restrictions around the joint and any cosmetic constraints. These inputs help the responsible designer evaluate the proposed connection as a complete serviceable assembly.

Identify the design responsibility

Ask who selects the joining system, who approves the details and who verifies the result. For an adhesive proposal, request the identified product and applicable processing instructions. For a fastener proposal, identify the hardware and interface drawing. A purchasing specification should point to controlled details rather than a generic technique.

Agree evidence before ordering

List the fit checks, inspection records or application-specific tests required for approval. Distinguish an exploratory sample from an approved production design. Record changes made after the sample so the final order does not accidentally call up an earlier, unverified configuration.

Frequently asked questions

Is bonding automatically lighter or better?

Not as a universal purchasing rule. Evaluate the complete joint against the project requirements.

Can a supplier sample be treated as design approval?

Only when the agreed approval process and verification requirements have actually been completed.
