Carbon Fiber and Metal Interfaces: What an RFQ Should Explain

Machining & Assembly / Purchasing guide

At a glance

When a carbon fiber component contacts metal, describe the whole interface: the metal grade, contact area, environment, hardware and any intended isolation or surface treatment. The procurement objective is to give the responsible engineer enough information to review compatibility and durability, rather than assuming that a visually neat connection is complete.

Document both materials

Identify the actual proposed composite and metal component, including relevant coatings or inserts. Avoid using “aluminium” or “carbon” as the only material description when the design requires more detail. Keep the supplier’s proposal tied to the assembly drawing so substitutions can be reviewed in context.

Describe exposure and handling

Explain whether the joint sees moisture, outdoor conditions, cleaning chemicals or other environmental factors relevant to the application. Ask the designer or supplier to specify any required interface treatment. Do not copy an isolation method from an unrelated application without checking the complete assembly requirements.

Inspect the assembled condition

Some interface details are no longer visible after assembly. Agree which records or checks are needed before closure and which are required on the finished component. Include the treatment and hardware details in the controlled documentation so they are not lost on a repeat order.

Frequently asked questions

Can the metal be changed without review?

Treat a material substitution as an interface change and review it against the approved requirements.

Does an attractive finish establish durability?

No. Appearance and environmental suitability need their own evidence and acceptance criteria.
