First-Article Inspection for Carbon Fiber Parts: Agree the Record Before Production

Purchasing & Quality / Purchasing guide

At a glance

A first-article inspection record should show which identified part was checked, against which drawing revision, by which agreed methods and with what results. A page marked “passed” is less useful than a record linked to specific requirements. Define the expected report before the sample is made.

Choose the acceptance characteristics

Identify the dimensions, interfaces, finish references and other requirements that the first article must demonstrate. Distinguish measured results from visual checks or document checks. Do not assume that a supplier’s standard report automatically covers every feature that matters to your assembly.

Make the sample traceable

Record the part identifier, drawing revision and sample or batch reference. Link the inspection report to the actual sample submitted for review. If the sample is modified after inspection, document the change and determine which checks need to be repeated.

Close exceptions explicitly

List out-of-specification results, unmeasured features and agreed deviations clearly. Identify who approves each exception and whether it applies only to the sample or to later production. Keep approval of the first article separate from acceptance of every future batch.

Frequently asked questions

Does a first-article pass accept all later batches?

No. Later production still follows its agreed inspection and acceptance requirements.

Should a modified sample keep the same unqualified report?

Record the modification and review whether affected checks must be repeated.
