A load cell’s rated capacity is not the complete specification of the force measurement used in a composite test. Keep the identified sensor, applicable calibrated range and expected test forces together. The frame capacity and the installed force sensor can also be different.
Identify the installed configuration
Record which load cell was installed for the test, rather than only the model of the testing machine. Instron publishes force-measurement information for specific load-cell configurations and ranges. Those details cannot be transferred to every sensor fitted to a similar frame.
Read how accuracy is expressed
An accuracy statement may refer to a percentage of the reading over a defined range. A displayed decimal place describes presentation and is not, by itself, evidence of that accuracy. Retain the actual specification and calibration information used to assess the planned force range.
Keep the evidence with the result
For a low-force specimen, ask the laboratory to identify the basis for its measurement configuration. Do not select a sensor by taking the largest capacity available or inferring a minimum from this article. Changing the sensor should remain visible in the test record, alongside the specimen, method and resulting force data.
