The removable backing sheet separates from the prepreg; it is not part of the intended laminate.

Prepreg Backing Sheets: Make Removal Checks Part of the Layup Record

Prepreg backing sheets protect material during handling and are removed as required by the applicable layup instruction. Their removal needs a clear check. A backing-sheet fragment left in a layup is not a laminate ply or an acceptable substitute for another process layer.

Use the actual material configuration

Prepregs can arrive with different backer arrangements. Identify the material and follow its handling instruction rather than assuming that every roll has the same removable layers. Keep the backing distinction clear when cut pieces are transferred to a kit or a new work surface.

Retain a practical check

Gurit’s processing guidance includes retaining and checking backers for damage and counting them in the layup records. The point is to make missing or incomplete removal visible during preparation. A count is useful only when the material and cutting arrangement make its meaning clear; it should not become an unexplained number on a finished-part certificate.

Resolve an observation at the relevant stage

If a backing sheet appears incomplete, identify the affected piece and record the review under the applicable production procedure. Do not silently continue and later describe the job only as cured. The handover should preserve the material, layup stage and relevant action. Finished-part inspection still follows its agreed scope; a tidy pile of removed sheets is not proof of every internal laminate characteristic.
