Carbon Fiber Hood Panel — configuration detail

Solid Carbon Fiber or Sandwich Panel? Define the Panel Before Buying

Plates & Panels / Purchasing guide

At a glance

Do not use “carbon fiber panel” as a complete material specification. First establish whether the requirement is for a solid laminate, a decorative facing or a sandwich construction. These describe different constructions. Procurement should capture the intended function and interfaces before asking a supplier to recommend a specific panel system.

Describe the job the panel must do

Explain how the panel is supported, what attaches to it and whether it is mainly cosmetic or part of a load-bearing assembly. Include the operating environment and any relevant design or test requirements. An attractive surface photograph cannot establish the construction beneath it, and an outside dimension cannot establish structural suitability.

Ask for the construction definition

For a proposed sandwich panel, request the facing specification, core identification, overall thickness and treatment of edges and inserts. For a solid laminate, request its agreed material and construction definition. Keep these requirements in the purchase documentation instead of relying on a product name that different suppliers may interpret differently.

Compare interfaces as well as panels

Check the intended fastener locations, cut-outs and exposed edges against the supplier proposal. Request a sample or drawing review for the actual interface. A panel comparison should include any additional edge finishing or attachment work; otherwise a seemingly similar quotation may omit the work needed to make the panel usable.

Frequently asked questions

Can thickness alone identify a sandwich panel?

No. Ask for a construction description or an approved section drawing rather than inferring the internal structure from overall thickness.

Can a sample settle every performance question?

A sample can establish appearance and fit. Performance acceptance needs the relevant design requirements and agreed verification method.
