How to Specify a Carbon Fiber Plate Hole Pattern Without Ambiguity

Plates & Panels / Purchasing guide

At a glance

A clear hole-pattern drawing defines hole size, position, orientation and the reference system used to inspect them. Sending a photograph with several dimensions written on it can start a discussion, but it is a weak production instruction. The aim is to make the intended pattern reproducible without relying on visual interpretation.

Establish the coordinate system

Identify a reference face and two reference directions. Dimension hole centres from the chosen datums or use an appropriate drawing convention agreed with the supplier. State the units. If the part can be installed upside down or rotated, add an orientation feature or a clear assembly view so a symmetric-looking pattern cannot be misunderstood.

Separate hole types

Distinguish clearance holes, slots, countersinks and counterbores. Describe both faces where a feature changes through the thickness. If the design uses a specific fastener or insert, provide its interface information. Avoid requesting a generic “standard hole” when the hardware and assembly method have not been settled.

Plan how the pattern will be checked

Identify the features that must align simultaneously with the mating part. Agree whether inspection uses measured coordinates, a gauge, a fit check or another method appropriate to the requirement. Include the mating drawing when useful, and record which document controls if its dimensions conflict with the plate drawing.

Frequently asked questions

Can the supplier copy holes from a photo?

A photo does not establish scale, perspective or hidden details reliably. Use it as context alongside a dimensioned drawing.

Do all holes need identical tolerances?

Only the design and assembly requirements can determine that. Identify the critical relationships and review them explicitly.
