A coordinate file needs enough context to reproduce its interpretation. Agree units, origin, axis directions, feature names and file format before comparing carbon fiber inspection data. A column of numbers without this information can be misread even when the original measurements were recorded correctly.
Define the meaning of each field
Identify whether a row contains a hole centre, measured surface point, fitted feature or nominal value. Use stable feature identifiers tied to the drawing. Keep units visible in the header or accompanying specification; do not infer millimetres from the magnitude of the values. Record the applicable datum scheme and viewing direction. A feature name such as Hole 1 needs the same meaning in the drawing, inspection plan and export.
Test the transfer with a small known record
Before a large inspection batch, exchange a short sample file and confirm that both systems interpret it correctly. Check decimal separators, delimiters, sign conventions and column order. Distinguish actual measurements from nominal coordinates and calculated deviations. Review any transformed coordinates explicitly rather than allowing software to silently mirror or rotate the data. The approved transfer test should retain the original file and the receiving interpretation.
Preserve evidence around the numbers
Include the part identity, drawing revision, inspection date and method with the coordinate data. If the file is reformatted for another system, retain the original and identify the conversion performed. Pass/fail conclusions must use the controlling requirement and decision rule; an apparently tidy import does not establish conformance. Ask for clarification when essential context is missing instead of repairing the numbers by assumption.
Example: decimal separators in an import
An inspection system exports comma-separated decimal values while a receiving spreadsheet expects a different delimiter. The buyer notices unexpected columns in the trial file. The teams agree the export settings and verify a known feature before processing the production record. The original file remains available so the conversion can be checked later.
