An in-mould surface layer and a post-mould coating represent different example manufacturing sequences.

Clear Coating or In-Mould Gelcoat on Carbon Fiber? Describe the Surface System

A transparent finish can be formed through different surface systems. Identify whether the quoted part includes an in-mould surface layer, a coating applied after moulding, or another specified treatment. Similar gloss does not identify the product or the manufacturing sequence.

Name what is being supplied

List the surface products and where they sit in the delivered construction. Avoid using clear coat as a catch-all for every transparent outer layer. The laminate resin, any in-mould coating and a later finish may be different materials with different preparation requirements.

Review the actual material combination

WEST SYSTEM discusses compatibility and preparation when coatings are applied over epoxy. Its guidance illustrates why the selected combination matters; it does not approve every coating over every carbon composite. Ask the supplier for the applicable product instructions and proposed sequence rather than borrowing a cure interval from a different system.

Approve more than the reflected light

A surface sample should identify the construction and treatment it represents. If painting, bonding or repair follows, record the handed-over surface condition. Appearance approval alone does not establish weathering, chemical resistance or structural performance. Those requirements need their own agreed scope and evidence for the finished configuration.

The outer surface system is identified separately from the underlying laminate resin and reinforcement.
