Before comparing materials, define what the panel must do: close an opening, carry an attachment, provide a visible surface or span between supports. Different duties can lead to different constructions even when the panels look alike.
Write the functional brief
Mark the supported edges, free edges and attached items. Identify the available thickness and whether the underside is visible. If appearance is the main requirement, say so; if a structural function is assigned, provide the relevant engineering requirements rather than asking for an arbitrary thickness.
Compare proposals at the same scope
Ask each supplier to describe the proposed construction, edge treatment and included finishing. Include inserts and any local reinforcement in the comparison. The most useful sample is one that represents the intended installation, not simply a small square that demonstrates the surface pattern.
