Carbon Fiber Composite Terminology: Avoid Ambiguous Purchase Descriptions

Editorial scope guide. The points are also available as readable text below.

A clear purchase description distinguishes the material, the manufacturing form and the finished component. Broad phrases such as aerospace carbon or premium composite should be replaced by identifiable requirements.

Translate shorthand into controlled references

Ask what a material label refers to: fibre designation, resin system, laminate construction or product family. Where a datasheet is cited, record its revision and the item it describes. Keep appearance terms such as gloss or woven face separate from material and performance requirements.

Use the same names across the order

Align the quotation, purchase order, drawing and inspection report. If a supplier uses a different description, resolve the difference before manufacture. This avoids receiving an item that matches an informal phrase while missing the intended specification.

Example scenario

The quotation says woven finish while the drawing specifies a material designation. Resolve whether the phrase describes only the visible face or the complete construction. Use the agreed terms consistently in the order and inspection record.
