Carbon Fiber Sustainability Claims: Ask for the Comparison Basis

Editorial scope guide. The points are also available as readable text below.

A carbon fiber part should not be labelled sustainable solely because it is light. Ask what is being compared, which life-cycle stages are included and what evidence supports the environmental claim.

Define the claim before requesting data

Distinguish recycled content, reduced manufacturing waste, lower use-phase energy and end-of-life recovery. These describe different things. Record the component boundary and the service assumptions behind a comparison so the result can be interpreted rather than repeated as a general claim.

Keep missing evidence visible

A supplier may have material records without having a completed life-cycle assessment for the final part. State that limitation clearly. Ask for the source, calculation boundary and relevant configuration when a quantified saving is offered. Do not transfer a result for another vehicle, material grade or recycling route to the part being purchased.

Example scenario

A proposed part contains recovered fibre, but no life-cycle comparison has been completed. Report the documented recycled-content statement on its own. Do not turn it into an unsupported claim that the whole product has a lower carbon footprint.
