Locating interfaces and securing bolts occupy distinct roles on the conceptual mounting plate.

Locating a Carbon Fiber Plate: Dowel Pins and Clearance Bolts Have Different Jobs

A bolt in a clearance hole does not automatically provide the same location as a defined pin interface. If a carbon fiber plate needs repeatable positioning, show how its position is established and how it is secured. Do not leave that distinction to the installer.

Map the locating features

Identify the intended locating contacts and the references used for them. Include the actual pin, bushing or other mating feature where applicable. A hole-pattern drawing can locate several centres without explaining which feature establishes position in the assembled equipment.

Review the whole mounting scheme

Multiple locating features can interact with the remaining clearance and contact conditions. Have the responsible design review the complete scheme rather than making every hole an unspecified tight fit. This article provides no universal pin fit, interference, tolerance or installation force for carbon laminates.

Keep securing and location in the check

For a sample trial, use the represented mating hardware and record the mounting condition. If the plate is removed and refitted, define what the relevant position check is intended to demonstrate. A plate that can be bolted down has shown an aspect of assembly; it has not, by that fact alone, demonstrated an unspecified positioning repeatability. Keep those requirements separate in the supplier enquiry and acceptance record.
