Carbon Fiber Panel Edges: What to Put on the Drawing

At a glance

The panel outline is only part of an edge specification. State whether the edge is exposed, touched during use, bonded to another component or hidden inside an assembly. These conditions lead to different review questions. A clear drawing identifies edge geometry and acceptance without inventing a universal edge treatment for every part.

Describe the edge in its assembly

Show nearby components and any clearance that matters. Identify corners, cut-outs and edges that will be accessible to an operator. If an edge forms a bonding interface, make that function explicit. Do not let a general cosmetic instruction overwrite a functional requirement elsewhere on the drawing.

Resolve the requested geometry

State the intended radius, chamfer or other geometry when the design requires it, and ask the supplier to confirm feasibility for the selected construction. Distinguish a designed feature from a general request to remove machining debris. Photographs can illustrate the desired appearance but should not replace critical dimensions.

Agree an inspection language

Use annotated examples to distinguish acceptable appearance from damage requiring review. Avoid an instruction such as “perfect edges” that has no reproducible acceptance method. Where exposed edges need a specific finishing or sealing process, identify the agreed process rather than assuming it is included in a standard machining price.

Frequently asked questions

Is edge finishing always included?

Do not assume so. Ask for it to be identified in the quotation and production drawing.

Can an edge photograph define a radius?

It can show intent, but a dimensioned section is the clearer way to define a controlled edge geometry.
