Describe the complete edge section

Provide a section through the opening rather than only a top-view outline. Show where the skins terminate, how the core edge is treated and which surfaces must remain accessible. A surface coating and a designed core closeout perform different jobs. State the exposure conditions so the engineering review can address the actual environment instead of relying on “sealed edge” as a catch-all instruction.

Review nearby hardware as a separate feature

A latch or hinge near an opening can need a different local construction from the surrounding panel. Identify the hardware, loading requirements and location relative to the cutout. Do not specify a screw into unspecified core material and assume the panel thickness supplies adequate support. Leave reinforcement or insert selection to a documented design review with acceptance evidence.

Inspect after the edge operation

The finished opening, edge treatment and hardware region should be checked in their final condition. Record the treatment material and the approved process where these are controlled. If a cutout is enlarged later, the original closeout may no longer describe the new edge. Include an instruction to review and restore the approved edge detail after authorised rework.

Example: an access opening in an equipment panel

A supplier receives a panel outline with a rectangular service opening. Before manufacture, the buyer adds a section describing the closed edge and a separate local detail for the latch. The first sample review checks the finished opening, latch engagement and edge continuity. The resulting acceptance record concerns this panel configuration, not an untested claim that every sandwich panel is waterproof.

Questions buyers ask

Is paint alone a core closeout?

Not automatically. The drawing must identify the designed edge construction and its purpose.

Can a completed panel be drilled later?

Only within an approved modification procedure that addresses the newly exposed construction.
