An enquiry for a carbon fiber medical-equipment component should identify exactly what is being supplied: a prototype shell, a mechanical support or a finished device. These are different responsibilities and cannot share a blanket approval claim.
Start with the component boundary
Give the component a drawing number and show how it fits into the equipment. State whether it is a development sample or a part intended for a released design. Identify any contact surfaces, cleaning exposure and supplied coatings so the device team can decide what evidence is needed.
Keep manufacturing evidence separate from device approval
Request material identification, process records and agreed inspection results for the component. These records support the device manufacturer’s assessment; they do not establish clinical performance. FDA guidance evaluates biocompatibility in the final finished device. A carbon-fiber label alone therefore cannot establish suitability for patient contact.
Example scenario
A prototype equipment cover is ordered for an early fit trial. The supplier can document the supplied material and measured dimensions. The project record should still identify it as a development component, without describing that delivery as approval of the finished medical device.
Points to record
| Supplied item | Name the part and its development or production status. |
|---|---|
| Contact and exposure | Identify contact surfaces, cleaning and intended environment. |
| Evidence owner | Assign component inspection and device-level approval separately. |
