A traceability mark needs an agreed location, method and readable content. Select a zone that remains accessible and does not conflict with bonding, clamping or critical surfaces. Do not assume a marking process is harmless simply because the mark is small.
Choose information that will be used
Start with the receiving and service workflow. A part number, revision and lot or serial reference may serve different purposes. Decide which must be on the part and which can remain on packaging or in the supplied record. Avoid placing a long production history on a tiny surface when a readable identifier can link to that history.
Review location and method together
Identify the marking area on the drawing and show whether it is visible after assembly. Ask the responsible technical team to approve the method for the material, finish and application. Labels, printing and other marking processes have different retention and surface implications. Do not specify engraving or laser marking on a structural laminate without an appropriate technical review.
Check legibility through the intended handling
Define when the mark must be readable and how it is checked. If scanning is required, agree the scanner conditions and data format, not only the visual appearance of a code. Consider packaging removal, assembly and cleaning within the stated service scope. Keep the identifier consistent across the part, inspection report and delivery record.
Example: an industrial mounting plate
The original label is applied to a face that becomes hidden under a bracket. The buyer moves the identifier to an approved accessible zone and links it to the inspection record. A sample is checked after representative assembly to confirm the code can be read. The new location avoids the specified bond and clamp areas.
