Drilling Carbon Fiber Through-Holes: Review the Exit-Side Support

The exit side of a through-hole is part of the machining setup even when it is hidden from the operator’s main view. Describe access, supporting contact and required final edge condition in the process review. This is distinct from inspecting the hole after it has been made.

Show the part section and access

A drawing or section should identify the entry and exit faces and any nearby cavities or attached features. A backing arrangement that is possible for a flat plate may be impractical inside a finished shell. The manufacturer needs the actual geometry to propose a suitable setup.

Control the supported condition

Supporting contact must suit the component and the agreed process. It should not unintentionally distort the part or mark a controlled surface. Temporary process items also need a removal and cleanup scope. This article does not specify a universal backing material, drilling speed or feed.

Inspect the finished requirement

The resulting hole still needs the dimensions and edge-condition checks required by the drawing. A documented support arrangement is process evidence, not automatic proof that the finished feature passes. Keep sample identity and its actual setup together when a trial is used to approve repeat work. If access or local construction changes later, review whether the original trial remains representative.
