Matched pairs or interchangeable spares?. Original explanatory schematic; not to scale and not a product test result.

Direct answer

Two shell halves that fit as one sample are not automatically interchangeable across a production batch. Decide whether halves are supplied as matched pairs or as independently replaceable parts. Then define the mating references, cosmetic match and evidence required for that supply model.

State the pairing strategy

A matched-pair product can retain the identity of both halves through inspection and shipment. A replacement programme needs a different requirement: a new half must fit previously supplied hardware within the agreed scope. State which model applies before approving tooling or samples. Do not promise interchangeable replacement parts solely because several complete assemblies fit individually.

Separate functional fit from appearance

Mating edge geometry, fastener alignment and seal compression concern assembly function. Weave continuity, colour and gloss concern appearance. A replacement half may meet one group of requirements without meeting the other. Identify the visible seam and the cosmetic comparison conditions so the review does not collapse all issues into the word “matching.”

Control reference masters and revisions

If a master assembly or checking fixture is used, identify its revision and how it represents the released product. Record changes to mating features and their compatibility with earlier parts. For interchangeable supply, agree a representative cross-matching plan. For matched pairs, preserve pair identifiers and communicate that replacement of one half may require further review.

Example: a two-piece instrument housing

Initial samples are accepted as complete housings. Later, the buyer asks to replace only the upper shell. The parties discover that replacement compatibility was never specified. They establish a mating reference and a cross-fit review for the replacement programme, while keeping the original matched assemblies identifiable. A cosmetic mismatch is evaluated separately from fastener and seam fit.

Questions buyers ask

Does first-article approval establish interchangeability?

Only if the approved inspection scope actually evaluated that requirement.

Should paired halves share one identifier?

Use a traceable scheme that preserves the relationship while identifying each supplied item.
