A pocket depth does not describe the material left beneath a recess. Define the local finished plate thickness, the depth reference and the required remaining wall together. Review the laminate and intended loads with the responsible engineer before removing material; a tidy pocket surface does not establish structural adequacy.
Draw the section that controls the recess
Provide a section through the pocket, including its base, transitions and nearby holes. Specify whether depth is measured from the finished outer face or another surface. A coating or a local thickness variation can change what the number means. If a minimum remaining wall is required, show where it applies and how it is to be verified. Do not infer this requirement from a render of the finished component.
Review what machining removes
A carbon laminate is not simply a homogeneous block with a decorative surface. Cutting a recess can remove reinforcement and expose a different layer arrangement. The proposed stock, machining allowance and pocket geometry need review for the specific part. Ask the supplier to flag conflicts between the requested recess and the proposed construction before quotation approval. This article does not provide a universal safe depth, feed rate or cutter selection.
Keep the pocket inspection local
An overall plate-thickness reading at an accessible edge may not represent the thickness beneath the pocket. Agree suitable measuring access, point locations and records. Include corner transitions, base condition and any machining findings in the review. If the remaining wall cannot be checked by the proposed method, resolve that gap before production. A depth reading and a fit check can be useful records, but they answer different questions.
Example: a recessed mounting pad
A component needs a shallow recess so a pad sits below the outer surface. The buyer supplies only pocket depth. The supplier requests the plate section and the required material beneath the pad. The final review documents the recess reference, local wall requirement and inspection method, then checks that the pad fits without treating fit as proof of part strength.
