Purchasing & Quality / Purchasing guide

At a glance

A datasheet must be read with its product identity, specimen definition and test conditions. A value describing a fibre, resin, laminate or finished component does not automatically describe the others. Before using a number in a specification, establish exactly what was measured and whether it applies to the proposed construction.

Identify the level of material

Check whether the document concerns reinforcement, resin, prepreg, a cured laminate or a finished product. Record the product reference and revision. Avoid combining a fibre property from one document with a resin or component claim from another and presenting the result as a verified specification.

Read the conditions around the value

Look for the test method, direction, specimen or construction description and stated conditioning. Distinguish typical or indicative information from a guaranteed acceptance requirement. If information needed by your designer is missing, ask the supplier for the applicable documentation rather than filling the gap with a visually similar product’s data.

Use the document in a review

Provide the datasheet to the responsible designer together with the intended application and manufacturing proposal. Record what is accepted as a design input and what still needs verification. Keep the approved material identity under change control so the documentation remains relevant to later orders.

Frequently asked questions

Can fibre strength be advertised as finished-part strength?

Not without the applicable component evidence. The document’s scope must be respected.

Are typical values always acceptance limits?

No. Read the stated status of the data and agree the actual purchase requirements separately.
