For a machined carbon fiber part, make the inside surface and both edges part of the inspection discussion when those regions matter to the assembly.

Follow the feature through the thickness

An entrance photograph records one face. The other face may have different edge quality, and a short bore can conceal loose material or a local defect from that view. Look at the feature from both accessible sides before fitting hardware. If only one side remains accessible in the finished assembly, carry out the relevant checks at an earlier stage.

Decide what can actually be seen

Lighting, magnification and the angle of view affect what an inspection image shows. A dark bore photographed from directly above can look clean simply because the surface is not visible. Use a method suited to the feature and retain enough context to identify the hole. Avoid interpreting an unclear photograph as evidence that an edge condition meets the requirement.

Tie the requirement to the hole function

A passage for a cable has a different concern from a locating hole or an attachment hole. State whether the review is looking for obstruction, a contact edge, dimensional fit or a specified defect condition. Deburring and finishing can change dimensions, so a general instruction to remove all roughness should not override a controlled fit or an approved process.

Report which regions the inspection method actually covers. View full size.

Make incomplete coverage visible in the report

Identify features that could not be inspected and explain why. The report should distinguish a visual edge check from a dimensional bore measurement; neither automatically substitutes for the other. If the sample must be sectioned or checked by another method, agree that scope rather than treating it as an invisible routine step. Clear coverage notes help both buyer and supplier understand what was actually established.

Useful information for an enquiry

Entrance and exit edge coverage

Visible bore surface and lighting

Hole function and acceptance condition

Uninspected regions recorded

Related: Clearance Holes and Countersinks in Carbon Fiber: Define the Hardware Interface · Fastening a Carbon Fiber Part When Only One Side Is Accessible.

Discuss your component with Litian Yunde · Browse the component guides

{"@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "BlogPosting", "@id": "https://www.carbon-fiber-corp.com/carbon-fiber-machined-hole-inside-edge-inspection/#article", "headline": "Inspecting the Inside Edges of Holes in Machined Carbon Fiber", "description": "A clean entrance does not show the whole machined hole.
