A removable caul is located above a conceptual laminate stack and is not counted as a delivered ply.

Caul Plates in Composite Moulding: Define the Process Contact Surface

A caul plate is a process tool or sheet used at an identified contact surface. If it is included in the proposed manufacturing route, show its location and role. Do not describe it as an extra structural ply in the delivered carbon fiber component.

Draw the process stack

Place the caul, laminate, primary tool and relevant separating layers on the process sketch. State which items are removed after the operation. This makes a discussion about a bag-side surface more precise than describing the whole upper stack simply as the bag.

Describe the intended function

The supplier may use a caul to control an identified surface or distribute contact during processing. Record the actual proposal and any required release arrangement. The name alone does not establish a flatness tolerance, surface finish or pressure distribution for every part.

Retain the represented arrangement

A sample made with one caul arrangement should not silently become approval for a different one. If the process contact changes, ask which delivered characteristics need review. Keep the process-tool description separate from product drawings and acceptance results. A clean-looking contact face is useful visual information, but dimensional and laminate requirements still follow their agreed inspection scope.

Process contact arrangement and finished-surface acceptance remain separate records.
